I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about how to move forward with this blog. How many times a week should I post? What days should I post? Who am I trying to attract, what message am I sending, wtf am I even going to talk about? (I’m not thaaat interesting).
I’ve decided I am going to post every single Monday. I don’t want to post more than once a week because I don’t want to rush or force anything. I want to make sure the content I’m putting out into the world is my best work and an honest reflection of my true self. I solemnly swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help me God. (I wanted to be a criminal lawyer for a long time, can you tell?)
I don’t know why everyone hates Mondays so much. I love them. Actually, Monday might be my favorite day of the week. To me, Monday is a clean slate. I think that people who consider the beginning of the week to be Sunday are nuts, no offense. Sunday’s are my day to wind down, relax, and catch my breath. I usually plan to do a bunch of things on Sunday, like work out (ew), but end up basking in the glory that is my bed and periodically checking the snack drawer. For someone like me who is unbelievably Type A, Monday’s rock because I can get all of my shit together and kick off my week with a super productive day.
Today I meditated (day two of the my new meditation practice!), worked out with my trainer, worked a hectic lunch shift, ran a bunch of errands, scheduled a bunch of appointments, penciled in all of the things I need to get done this week, and then sat down to eat dinner with my family. Now, I’m laying in bed, writing this post, and feeling nice and full…both physically (my mom makes a bomb dinner) and metaphorically.
I love filling my days, even if they’re full of mundane things, like going to get blood work and renewing my license (things on the to-do list for tomorrow!). There is so much beauty in the mundane parts of life. Often times, people are running frantically from one errand to the next. Even during the errands, we aren’t engaged or present in whatever it is we’re doing. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve bumped with my grocery cart because I was Snapchatting someone, and how many cashiers I haven’t given my full attention to because I’m on the phone with a friend making plans for the evening.
Typing that really pissed me off actually. I work as a cashier at a local restaurant. It drives me crazy when people place their order while simultaneously talking into their earpiece, or don’t make eye contact with me because they’re answering a text. What could be more important than being engaged in the moment you’re in and giving the people you’re connecting with your undivided attention? It isn’t fair to me when people are on the phone while I’m trying to take their order, nor is it fair for the person on the other line to be interrupted every 3 seconds so they can tell me if they want french or multigrain bread with their dang soup.
And there’s the beauty of the mundane. I had no idea what I was going to write about when I opened up my computer tonight. I just sort of let my fingers do their thing on the keys. In reflecting on my pretty standard, uneventful day, I realized something really important.
I’m not following through on my intention to be engaged in each and every moment. I made a good effort this morning…I didn’t even touch my phone until after I had gotten back from my workout which was at 10 am, and I had a really wonderful morning. But by the time I finished work I had slipped back into my normal routine of doing a million things at once. I’m pretty sure I didn’t tell the cashier at Staples to have a good day because I was in the middle of catching up on Snapchat stories I missed while I was at work. Like that is DISGUSTING.
So here is my Monday Manifesto.
I promise to do my best to be present in each and every moment. Life is too short to spend it with my nose buried in a screen. I promise to do more things that make me feel full and happy when I close my eyes to go to sleep at night. I promise to take a moment each evening to reflect and search for the nuggets of wisdom that are hidden amongst the mundane tasks of everyday life. Will I do all of these things perfectly? Nope, definitely not. But, I promise to give it my best effort.
I challenge you to reflect back on your day. Try to remember all of the places you went, all of the people you saw. Chances are, you may draw a blank. Now, I challenge you to make your own Monday Manifesto. What did you learn today that you can carry with you tomorrow? Where can you improve? Give yourself credit on the things you did great today, you deserve it. What can you do tomorrow, and every day, that will make you go to bed feeling full and happy? Dream it, then do it.
